I know this personally as someone who has passed exams in German at this level and found that estimate spot on.<\/p>\n<p>As someone who\u2019s also learned and taught languages including Mandarin, Biblical Hebrew, Latin, German, and Sanskrit, I can tell you this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It\u2019s not the number of words you know.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s which words (and how you learn and retain them) that make all the difference.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this post, you\u2019ll learn:<\/p>\n<p>Exactly how many words are required at each fluency level<\/p>\n<p>How to figure out your current vocabulary size<\/p>\n<p>Memory techniques that help you learn more, faster\u2014and keep it all in long-term memory<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s break it down so you can stop guessing and start making meaningful progress in any language you\u2019re learning.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>How Many Words Do You Need to Know to Be Fluent in a Language? The Answer<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to understand approximately 75% of what native speakers are talking about in everyday life, you\u2019ll need between 1000-1200 words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fluentin3months.com\/cefr-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A2 on the CEFR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> test. For that accomplishment, you\u2019ll need knowledge of approximately 1000 words. What really matters is this question:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How <em>exactly<\/em> are these words counted? Take the word \u201crun\u201d in English, for example. Is it really just one word?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not really. It\u2019s also:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To run<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To have run<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ran<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Running<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are other examples, such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> becoming <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dogs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> becoming <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cats<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A lot depends on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dog\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">morphology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because in some languages, grammar will determine whether a new word needs to be used or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In sum, the number of words you need to learn to become fluent depends on two things:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your personal definition of fluency (a.k.a. your goal)<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">The way you speak in your mother tongue in order to accomplish everyday goals<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An external testing structure like the CEFR<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Why Word Count Alone Can Be Misleading<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take the CEFR as your standard, which is not a bad idea, then C2 requires familiarity with 16,000 words. But this is generally based on what you will need to understand scholarly and academic writing, a class of information that may have little or nothing to do with your daily life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, keep in mind that how those words in the different levels involves matters of grammar. You can often boost your word count just by knowing how one word changes across different tenses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For more on memorizing grammatical matters quickly, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/cracking-the-code-of-grammar-memorization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this tutorial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But you can also think about the exact number of words you need by thinking about the goals you need to achieve. If you don&#8217;t read scholarly papers, then you might not need anything close to 16,000 words.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>How to Figure Out How Many Words You Truly Know<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about your mother tongue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many words in the language can you recall right now?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chances are that you would struggle to list all the words you\u2019ve learned over the course of your lifetime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same thing will be true when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-become-fluent-in-a-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working towards fluency<\/a>. This is because <em>active vocabulary<\/em> consists of the words we use most often, even in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/easiest-languages-to-learn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">easiest language you can choose to learn<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Truth About &#8220;Active vs &#8220;Passive Vocabulary&#8221; (And Why It Matters)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Passive vocabulary<\/em>, on the other hand, involves words that have gone into reserve. We have to stretch to remember them because we use them less often. That, or we might undergo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/deskilling\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linguistic deskilling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a variety of reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, this happened to my English when I spoke primarily <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-learn-german\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">German<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a few years. Here are a few things you can do.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>One: Anki<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anki is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/spaced-repetition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spaced repetition<\/a> app that will help you track your recall rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy to misuse this software, however. To avoid failing to use it properly, be sure to check out my article on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-use-anki\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to optimize Anki<\/span><\/a> for language learning and other goals.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Two: Flashcards<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you use physical <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-memorize-flashcards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flashcards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as part of your language learning efforts, you can simply count how many you answer correctly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Three: Listening Tests<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throw on a podcast or movie in the language you\u2019re learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using a notebook, keep track of how many words you recognize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There might be a catch with this kind of testing, however. If the movie or podcast is in a dialect you\u2019re not familiar with, your accuracy count might not be accurate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can happen in your mother tongue too. For example, when watching <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadwood<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Witch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both of which use older forms of English, I sometimes didn\u2019t recognize words or expressions, even though they are technically in my mother tongue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Four: Reading Tests<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you read, keep a tally of how many words you understand. If you read at an especially high level, you can probably just count the amount of words on one line and multiply that by the number of lines on the page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Also, test with a variety of books in the language you&#8217;re learning. These can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/best-language-learning-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">graded readers designed for language learners<\/a>, fiction or non-fiction.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I got a famous German book and was delighted by how I can cruise through many pages and recognize almost every word. But when I pick up a Thomas Mann novel, I get the inverse effect.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Four: Writing Tests<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every once in a while, sit down and compose an email to someone on a topic in the language you\u2019re learning. If you don&#8217;t have a friend or speaking partner in the target language, you can still complete the exercise without sending it to anyone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I highly recommend ample regular written communication with a variety of people who speak your target language. Definite and indefinite articles should be excluded from the count, for example.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Six: Record a Conversation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re meeting with a language learning teacher regularly, you can record the sessions. Then, when you review the recording, count the words you know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you need tools for doing this, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/best-language-learning-software\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">check out the part<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of my language learning software post where I talk about how I record my sessions and review them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Seven: Review Your Memory Palace Networks<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the language learning parts of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/masterclass\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnetic Memory Method Masterclass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you learn to use a special memory device called a Memory Palace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once it\u2019s populated with vocabulary, it\u2019s easy to know how many words you know. This is because you\u2019ll have one word on each station.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At more advanced levels, you can start to memorize entire sentences on each station of your Memory Palace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This simple strategy will help you scale your vocabulary much faster than continuing to memorize just one word at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Seven: Sit for an Exam<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you really want to know where your level of fluency is at, arrange to take an exam. When I sat for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-learn-chinese\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">level III Chinese exam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example, it was based on the HSK system.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>How to Become Fluent in Any Language Fast<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The truth about fluency is that you simply want to be able to accomplish the goals that are important to you in the language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most people, you\u2019ll want to shoot for B1, which is achievable within 6 months to a year. This CEFR level will equip you with at least 2000 words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chances are that you\u2019ll have a much bigger vocabulary than that, however, especially if you\u2019re reading regularly in the language. After all, books are the ultimate spaced-repetition app.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But beyond reading, here are the steps you need to follow:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Lean Into Multiple Media<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve just mentioned the importance of reading. You also need ample doses of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listening<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memorizing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the listening and reading component, check out my tutorial on using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/language-learning-with-netflix\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix to learn a language<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They\u2019re constantly hunting the Internet for the \u201cmagic bullet\u201d that will finally help them learn the language they\u2019re interested in.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It won\u2019t happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, you need to milk the materials you already have for all they\u2019re worth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make progress much faster, limit yourself to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One video course<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One audio program<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One textbook<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One teacher<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stick with them until you\u2019ve reached a milestone before moving on to the next.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Learn How to Associate<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fastest way to commit anything to memory is association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that you take something unfamiliar and associate it with something you already know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you learn how to do so, you\u2019ll be able to benefit from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/active-recall\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">active recall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For help with this, you can learn association techniques like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/link-and-story-methods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">story method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/pegword-method\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pegword method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a quick example of association, think of a word like \u201cvocabulary.\u201d Just pretend for the sake of this example that you don\u2019t know it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To use association to learn it, you would look at the first letter of the word. It\u2019s a V so I\u2019m going to think of a Vulcan named Spock. He\u2019s on his way to see <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ferris Bueller\u2019s Day Off<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at a theater next to a library.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the Memory Palace technique <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/memory-palace-language-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">specifically for language learning<\/a>, you would <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">place <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this association in a familiar location, such as on your living room couch. Or you could use an outdoor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/journey-method\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journey<\/a>, like the one pictured above that I&#8217;ve used for memorizing Sanskrit phrases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With a smart and strategic approach to creating your Memory Palaces, you can memorize thousands of words and phrases with ease.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Embrace Mistakes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fastest way to reach fluency is to make as many mistakes as you can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, some would-be learners just can\u2019t get past the embarrassment. That, or their egos are too strong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the reality is that making mistakes develops pattern recognition through comparison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And of course, we need to realize that even as experts in our mother tongues, we still sometimes misspeak. These activities are also good for your memory overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Fluency On Demand<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone can develop fluency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And everyone should. The benefits of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/bilingualism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bilingualism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are too good to ignore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trick is to let the numbers help you, not frustrate you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CEFR levels are probably the best indicator out there, and the best part is that you can practice for the texts without worrying too much about exactly how many words you know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many of us, numbers will serve as milestones that we use to chart our progress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personally, I&#8217;ve never stressed about it. It\u2019s helped me earn degrees, travel the world, and speak with the locals in their language while visiting many different countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve learned 1200 words for A2, reached B1 and probably now have 16,000 words for German by now. But as I&#8217;ve tried to show in this post, what matters is not your word count. It&#8217;s how consistently you study and practice.<\/p>\n<p>And the more you base the words and phrases you learn on what you regularly say on a daily basis, the faster you&#8217;ll reach functional fluency.
