This word means \u201cno sensation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSyn\u201d means that something is joined or coupled together. Thus, synesthesia means the joining or coupling of two or more sensations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And because many different kinds of sensations can be joined, that\u2019s why there are so many synesthesia types.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On this page, we\u2019ll go through the definitions of each one. You\u2019ll discover specific examples and interesting tidbits from scientific research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That way, you can leave with the fullest possible understanding of this condition. You might even be able to invoke it too using a resource I\u2019ll share below.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s get started.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The 10 Types of Synesthesia (with Examples, Causes, and Symptoms)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mitpress.mit.edu\/books\/synesthesia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">book on the topic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, neurologist Richard E. Cytowic states that approximately 4% of the population experience some form of synesthesia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exactly how long people experience their synesthesia is unknown, but many seem to drift in and out of it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mitpress.mit.edu\/books\/wednesday-indigo-blue\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wednesday Is Indigo Blue: Discovering the Brain of Synesthesia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Cytowic and his co-authors David Eagleman and Dmitri Nabokov found that evolutionary pressures may shape when and for how long a synesthesia condition affects people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The condition also tends to be unidirectional. As they point out, a person might experience the letter J as blue. However, seeing blue does not cause them to think about the letter J or experience \u201cJ-ness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most forms of synesthesia belong roughly to what some people call \u201cProjection Synesthesia.\u201d That is, something in the brain causes their minds to project senses that aren\u2019t there for the rest of us. I know it was a Wednesday, because the date is blue in my mind and Wednesdays are always blue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Born-Blue-Day-Daniel-Tammet-ebook\/dp\/B00GW4W9KC\/scricast-20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born on a Blue Day: A Memoir of Aspergers and an Extraordinary Mind<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Tamet says that Tuesday is a \u201cwarm color\u201d and Thursday is \u201cfuzzy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This lack of specificity for some days of the week should remind us of the consistency issue raised by Cytowic. Or it\u2019s possible that some days have <em>substances<\/em> for Tamet rather than colors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is this the same as associating numbers with colors. Not necessarily. For that we need to learn more about our next type.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Two: Grapheme Color Synesthesia<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you see or think about the letter \u201cA,\u201d does it have a color?\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some people it does. Likewise with numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people will read letters and numbers and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">them as colors. This suggests just as much nurture in the development of this form of synesthesia as nature.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Three: Chromesthesia<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chromesthesia, or colored hearing, means that the individual experiences colors connected with sounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1053810017305883\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sounds can trigger more than colors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well. A person with this condition might hear music and experience shapes, landscapes or textures.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Composers who may have drawn upon this type of synesthesia include Franz Liszt and Jean Sibelius.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Four: Ordinal Linguistic Personification<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this manifestation of synesthesia, the individual will experience numbers, days, months and multiple kinds of words and things as if they were people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the word \u201ccamping\u201d might be experienced as having a gender and a tendency towards grumpiness. But you don\u2019t just see it. You <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feel <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it as if you were the one shaking hands. That\u2019s what is meant by Mirror Touch synesthesia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2013.00776\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a two-year study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Charlotte A. Chun and Jean-Michel Hup\u00e9, these researchers found that many kinds of people with synesthesia experience this form. There was no way to predict which kinds of people might have this kind, but they did see some indication that French people were more likely to experience grapheme color synesthesia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Six: Spatial Sequence Synesthesia<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are at least two parts to Spatial Sequence Synesthesia, sometimes called \u201cNumber Form\u201d synesthesia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, the person experiences numbers units as having distinct locations. For example, take an organizational unit like a calendar. She has indicated how she can rotate her point of view around their location.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another point:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of experiencing this form of the condition might mean that people experience numbers &#8220;floating in space at a fixed distance from their body.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Seven: Auditory-Tactile Synesthesia<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also called \u201cSound-Touch Synesthesia,\u201d this form of the condition means that common sounds create physical sensations in the listener. These are typically described as \u201ctingling\u201d and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jneurosci.org\/content\/28\/50\/13696\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be intense enough to deeply disturb the individual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies in people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17893864\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thalamic lesions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown that this part of the brain might be responsible for both physical and sound sensations. This area of knowledge is one place where knowing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/cranial-nerves-mnemonic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to remember the cranial nerves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could also be helpful because they contribute to some of our ability to perceive physical and auditory sensations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Eight: Lexical-Gustatory Synesthesia<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine tasting the words of this article as you read it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s exactly what would be happening to you now if you had lexical-gustatory synesthesia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have found that amongst the few people who experience this condition, the experience is very <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21923788\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intense but lacking in quality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Brain scans show that the parts of the brain involved in emotions light up, which may explain the magnitude of these experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25084\" src=\"https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/brain-scans.jpg?strip=all&lossy=1&quality=60&ssl=1\" alt=\"brain scans\" width=\"1280\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/brain-scans.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 1280w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/brain-scans-300x188.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/brain-scans-1024x640.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/brain-scans-768x480.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/brain-scans-758x474.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;ssl=1 758w, https:\/\/e5hougg55fx.exactdn.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/brain-scans.jpg?strip=all&amp;lossy=1&amp;quality=60&amp;w=512&amp;ssl=1 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sound-gustatory is much the same. However, in this case, the sense of taste is triggered by noises and auditory modulations in the person\u2019s environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve talked about taste. What about smelling colors?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This too is something that happens to people with synesthesia, but seems much less common than some of the other types.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although subjective feelings are involved in each of these, it\u2019s hard to say if any of them amount to emotional synesthesia as a type on its own. More research needs to be done, some of which is being uncovered by those investigating our next type.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Nine: Misophonia Synesthesia<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with misophonia can be triggered to rage by everyday sounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers have not been able to find out much about it. Some conclude that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/comments\/S0960-9822(16)31530-5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many people fail to report their symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for fear of being stigmatized.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the opposite end of the spectrum, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ASMR\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ASMR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been all the rage over the past few years. Softer B-sounds are generally perceived as more like the rounded drawing to the right. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Decoding-Irrational-Consumer-Commission-Neuromarketing\/dp\/0749473843\/scricast-20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Derren Bridger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, marketers have long known about this tendency and used it to help dream up product names.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much more research needs to be done on this branch of synesthesia. It\u2019s not yet clear <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/257909728_Ideaesthesia_Conceptual_processes_assign_similar_colours_to_similar_shapes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if colors are also involved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in how people might experience these conceptual approaches to linking sounds with shapes in a conceptual way.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><\/b><b>Can You Give Yourself Synesthesia?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t think so.
