Objective reasoning is not some kind of superhero force of good battling the dark forces of subjectivity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But without placing our subjective experiences and ideas within the context of as much pure objectivity as possible, we rob ourselves of important opportunity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What opportunity?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opportunity to harness the power of context. Moreover, we want to enjoy the fullest possible field of context so that we can successfully weigh all of our options before making critical decisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>What Is Objective Reason? A Working Definition<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Objective reason goes beyond decision-making and your overall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/critical-thinking-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">critical thinking strategy<\/a> skill stack. Being able to reason objectively also helps you understand history, psychology and many other topics much better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And when you can reason through any topic using multiple layers of reasoning, you\u2019ll remember more as you understand the contexts at play much better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When defining objectivity, we need to look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-think-logically\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">standards of thinking<\/a>. In other words, we want our definition to include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Logic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impartiality and balance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practical matters<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theoretical matters<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time for deliberation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychological biases that interfere with biases.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a phrase, objective reason is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/thought-process\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mental thought process<\/a> that requires logical consideration of a situation or topic that is informed of the possibility for distortion from subjective bias.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, people using objective reasoning will be:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highly self-aware of their minds<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aware of a variety of tools for analysis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Informed about the role of science and data in making good decisions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willing to take time for research and deliberation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>What Is Subjective Reasoning?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People using subjective reasoning tend to either avoid or not know about the importance of objective tools, theories and the need 400;\">Instead, they rely upon their personal opinions, experiences and tastes. If they think outside of their personal context, they will tend to refer only to other people they know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, they will say, \u201cI don\u2019t know anyone who has had this experience,\u201d and allow that small, personal data set influence their decisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By contrast, an objective reasoner will say, \u201cAlthough I don\u2019t know anyone who has this experience, I\u2019ll do some research to find out what scientific studies exist so I can expand my awareness.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This form of reasoning is objective because it looks to the external world for information rather than relying solely on the individual\u2019s first-person experience and ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Is Objectivity Even Possible?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer is <em>yes<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, we need to realize that the tools of science and data appear in the human brain\u2019s of individuals. In fact, we need them to survive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, humans are biased for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/9781119125563.evpsych241#:~:text=Biases%20are%20often%20ascribed%20to,that%20contributed%20to%20fitness%20ancestrally.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evolutionary reasons critical to our survival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But in the modern world, researchers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Daniel_Kahneman\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daniel Khaneman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown many ways we can avoid some of the traps of subjective reasoning and become objective where it is useful to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to learning about cognitive biases, it is useful to also study <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fivebooks.com\/best-books\/ariel-rubinstein-on-game-theory\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">game theory books<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and texts on critical thinking. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Why_People_Believe_Weird_Things\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why People Believe Weird Things<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Michael Shermer is one of my favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/best-critical-thinking-books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">critical thinking books<\/a> of all time. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youarenotsosmart.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You Are Not So Smart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a close second.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>How To Be Objective In Your Decisions<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we have a working definition of objective reasoning, let\u2019s dive into some tips that will help you use objectivity to make better decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll share even more of my favorite books along the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>One: Keep Learning About The Differences Between Objective and Subjective Reasoning<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you\u2019re here, the journey has just begun. And it\u2019s very important you keep studying this topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s why:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s nice to learn about things, but that doesn\u2019t mean you will completely understand them, let alone remember the key points.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To really benefit from developing objectivity in ways that will benefit you for life, find books that will teach you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The history of reasoning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cultural\/geographical differences that influence reasoning (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proxemics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proxemics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philosophical issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychological issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decision making books related to specific topics (business, family, health, etc)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a great journey and the more you learn about this topic, the more you can learn about it as your brain makes deeper connections over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Two: Practice Objective Reasoning Frequently<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of educating yourself, the key to making objective style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision to start<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ongoing analysis of your thought processes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning to identify and separate your subjective reasoning impulses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating distance and delay between your subjective ideas before making decisions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analyzing your own subjectivity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performing needed deliberation and\/or research<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress-testing your conclusions by imagining various outcomes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making the decision and following up with \u201cpostmortem\u201d For example, we can wind up getting so involved in gathering and analyzing data that we wind up in collector\u2019s fallacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So as useful as metrics certainly are for testing the validity of the decisions we\u2019ve made, it\u2019s important to cultivate and maintain an awareness of the potential traps in data. This is one of the core points of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/books\/hardcover\/9780691174952\/the-tyranny-of-metrics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Tyranny of Metrics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which anyone interested in objective thinking would do well to read.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Ten: Explore Other Kinds Of Objective Thinking<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the W.R.A.P. formula, referring to other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/types-of-thinking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thinking models<\/a> is one of my favorite things to do. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.triz40.com\/aff_Principles_TRIZ.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triz principles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have many useful processes that can get you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-think-faster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">thinking<\/a> in multiple ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although something like Triz applies to design and engineering, it will still be beneficial. Thinking through such principles, you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/benefits-of-critical-thinking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expand your perspective<\/a> and can look at your area of expertise with greater objectivity through another lens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Eleven: Revisit Your Assumptions Frequently<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-23153\" you keep sharp is to develop a regular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/rereading-strategy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rereading strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also change as we age, so it only makes sense to revisit our thinking, ideally by going through the same sources that formed our thought processes in the first place.. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, the world is always transforming too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How To Remember The Steps Involved In Objective Reasoning<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, you might have noticed the nuance involved in developing reasoning skills that will last for life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the good news is that you can remember everything quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To do that, I recommend style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Anyone Can Develop, Maintain And Improve Their Objective Thinking<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/memory-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Identifying your cognitive biases<\/a> and learning about logical fallacies are admirable learning projects. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s just important to understand that the task is never done.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be truly objective, you not only need to make sure you nurture yourself with multiple viewpoints and learn to be a solid researcher. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need to continually revisit the process in order to compensate for change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your subjectivity won\u2019t go away either, so it\u2019s important to develop the ability to contextualize it amongst the multiple factors that go into being an individual with a sense of self.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Above all, practice making decisions with these tools frequently. Analyze the results of the decisions and allow the data to help guide future choices you make.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of this should be a chore.
