I did not have to look it up on Google Maps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The path from my favorite cafe to my apartment is laid out clearly in my brain. Every turn, every lane is distinctly mapped in my memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can I do this?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is my superpower. Voila!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, that\u2019s not correct. It\u2019s not <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">superpower. That <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spatial representation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can include the exact specifics of a location and the general area of a location.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we interact with our surroundings, we interpret and encode them into mental maps or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nodes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knowledge<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We then use these mental maps or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spatial information <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to travel to our favourite restaurant, nearest hospital or just get to the office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can also use mental maps to form <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/memory-palace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">powerful memory palaces<\/a> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magneticmemorymethod.com\/how-to-remember-things\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">memorize anything<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They are a small part of a person&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spatial cognition<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The branch of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cognitive psychology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that studies how you gain and utilize knowledge about your environment to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identify <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where you are, how to obtain resources, and how to find your way home is known as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spatial cognition<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to D.R. Montello, in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/referencework\/9780080430768\/international-encyclopedia-of-the-social-and-behavioral-sciences\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">International Encyclopedia of the Social &amp; Behavioral Sciences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2001:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe cognitive (or mental) map includes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knowledge<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of landmarks, route connections, and distance and direction relations; nonspatial attributes and emotional associations are stored as well. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in many ways, the cognitive map is not like a cartographic \u2018map in the head.\u2019 It is not a unitary integrated representation, but consists of stored discrete pieces including landmarks, route segments, and regions. The separate pieces are partially linked or associated frequently so as to represent hierarchies such as the location of a place inside of a larger region.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/em><a id=\"Importance of Cognitive Maps\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Importance of Cognitive Maps\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognitive mapping has a definite <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">function<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cognitive processes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> take place automatically. You are usually not cognizant of this latent learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now when you need to find a building or object on that particular route, your cognitive mapping of that route comes into play. Your cognitive processes use existing knowledge of the environment to generate new knowledge or pathways to find the building or object.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You usually do not have a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">problem<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> locating a familiar place, even if you have access to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wide range<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental models<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cognitive Maps &amp; Mazes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edward Tolman&#8217;s experiments involving rats and mazes was how he was able to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">visualize<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the importance of cognitive mapping in the human brain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tolman placed a rat in a cross-shaped maze and allowed it to explore the maze.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the rat had explored the maze for a bit, it was placed at one arm of the cross, and food was kept at the next arm to the immediate right.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the rat was familiar with the layout, it learned to turn right at the intersection to get to the food.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, the rat was placed at a different arm of the cross maze. Tolman was interested to see if there was a change in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did it get lost?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, the rat was still able to move in the direction of the food no matter where in the maze it was placed. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Differences<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the position of the rat did not matter. Tolman stated that this was because of the initial cognitive map it had created of the maze.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tolman\u2019s experiments with rats ingrained the idea of the cognitive map in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cognitive psychology<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<a id=\"How do Cognitive Maps Work\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>How do Cognitive Maps Work?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">process<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">design<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cognitive maps in your brain?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your brain creates a cognitive map using a number of sources.
